Freedmen's contract, 1867 Apr. 14.

Labor contract dating to Reconstruction era in Fairfield County, S.C., for the year 1 Jan. 1867-1 Jan. 1868, between D.T. Crosby and African American freedmen Dink, Barnet, and minors Dal, Wade, and John. Document stipulates wages, duties, and obligations, including shares of the crops alloted, provisions and tools to be furnished, and describing a system of "fines and forfeitures in cases of negligence or carelessness." Also includes published transcription and interpretation of contract published by Jessie Melville Fraser in 1940.
